Two people died and four others were injured in a shooting at the Citibank Center complex in Tampa on Wednesday.
The incident occurred near East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Interstate 75. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired at 12:11 p.m. The first marked unit arrived within one minute and entered the building immediately.
Body camera footage released by the HCSO shows an officer running toward the scene. The video captures a silver sedan that had crossed security fences and driven across a grassy area before stopping inside a fenced section of the complex. The officer continued to the cafeteria, where people shouted that the suspect was inside and possibly down.
An armed Citibank security guard confronted the suspect in the cafeteria and opened fire. HCSO stated the suspect was transported to Tampa General Hospital at 12:24 p.m. and pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m. A second person died at the scene. Four additional individuals were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, though authorities have not detailed the specific circumstances of those wounds.
More than 3,200 people were on campus when the shooting began. A total of 367 HCSO deputies responded to the call, including SWAT, Aviation, Drone, and K9 units. Local, state, and federal agencies joined the effort, bringing the total law enforcement presence to over 400 personnel. Officers secured the area and cleared the buildings within two hours.
Sheriff Chad Chronister described the attack as a tragedy where the victim was killed by an individual intent on killing as many people as possible. He credited the on-site security team and the deputies with stopping the suspect before he could cause more harm. A homicide investigation is underway to determine the motive and whether the suspect had a connection to the deceased victim.
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or the attacker. The HCSO asked anyone with video footage related to the incident to submit it to videos@teamhcso.com.
