Oxford, Miss. The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs rolled out of Oxford, Miss., with a 42-7 victory over No. 12 Mississippi on Saturday night. The decisive win snapped the Ole Miss Rebels' 16-game home winning streak and extended Georgia's run in the Southeastern Conference.
Gunner Stockton led the offense, completing 9 of 15 passes for 186 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a 15-yard score. The Bulldogs controlled the opening 22 minutes, converting four drives into touchdowns from distances of 72, 96, 61, and 50 yards. Ole Miss crossed the midfield line only once during that period.
Georgia built a 28-0 halftime lead, finishing the first half with 298 yards of total offense. The team accumulated 482 yards overall. The receiving corps featured Talyn Taylor, who caught four passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns. His scores came on receptions of 3, 6, and 65 yards. Ethan Barbour added a 58-yard touchdown catch.
The ground game provided balance as the Bulldogs rushed for 295 yards. Nate Frazier led the rushers with 107 yards on 16 carries. Craig Dandridge Jr. contributed a 4-yard touchdown run. On defense, linebacker Chris Cole recorded nine tackles, two quarterback hurries, one and a half sacks, and one and a half tackles for loss.
The Rebels' offense struggled to find rhythm. Trinidad Chambliss completed 18 of 34 passes for 170 yards but was sacked five times and threw one interception. Shekai Mills-Knight scored the team's only touchdown on an 8-yard run. Mississippi finished with 252 yards of total offense.
Ole Miss coach Pete Golding acknowledged the gap between the teams in the postgame press conference. "Georgia is a really good team but I did not see that butt-whipping coming," Golding said. "It was obvious that we (coaches) did not have the team ready to play."
Chambliss described the slow start as embarrassing. "It was surprising how poorly we started, it’s embarrassing," she said. "We have to have a short memory about this."
Georgia coach Kirby Smart praised the team's aggression. "A total team effort. I thought we embraced the challenge right from the start," Smart said. "We talked about being the hunter and being aggressive and I thought we did that."
Smart noted that this was his first win in Oxford in three attempts. "That was a big-time win over a big-time team in a big-time environment," he said. "We get to embrace it for 24 hours, then work to repeat it."
The result enhances Georgia's position for the College Football Playoff rankings, particularly after No. 1 Miami lost to No. 4 Notre Dame. Safety KJ Bolden said the win puts the Bulldogs in the hunt for the top spot. "It means we are in the hunt for whatever," Bolden said. "This win means a lot."
The teams met twice last season. Georgia won 43-35 at home, while Ole Miss won 39-34 in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl. Georgia will host No. 19 Missouri next Saturday. Ole Miss will travel to play Oklahoma next Saturday.
