Notre Dame football defeated No. 1 Miami 31-24 on Saturday night in South Bend, Indiana, ending a season-long frustration for the Irish. The victory serves as a direct avengement of last year's 27-24 loss to the Hurricanes, a result that previously kept Notre Dame out of the College Football Playoff. With the win, Notre Dame improves its record to 8-1 and secures the No. 11 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings. Miami falls to 8-1 and drops out of the top seed, though it remains in the playoff picture as the No. 1 team.
Quarterback CJ Carr led the offensive effort for Notre Dame, throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns. The Irish built a decisive lead early in the game, reaching a 24-3 advantage in the third quarter. This early surge allowed the team to control the tempo of the match. The final score of 31-24 reflects the 21-point cushion the Irish held before the Hurricanes mounted a late comeback attempt.
Notre Dame receivers Micah Gilbert and Jordan Faison caught two of Carr's touchdown passes each. Running back Nolan James Jr. added a rushing score for the Irish. The defensive unit also played a critical role in preserving the lead. Luke Talich recorded an interception in the third quarter, a play that helped stall Miami's momentum. The Irish never trailed at any point during the contest, a stark contrast to their performance in the previous season's meeting.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah threw three touchdown passes in an attempt to close the gap. Cooper Barkate caught two of those scoring throws, while Elija Lofton secured the third. The Hurricanes managed to get within one score of Notre Dame late in the fourth quarter. With 3:36 remaining in the game, Lofton appeared to catch a pass in the end zone that would have made the score 31-30. Officials reviewed the play and ruled the catch incomplete, keeping Miami at 24 points.
The missed fourth-down catch gave Notre Dame possession on downs. The Irish ran the clock down to approximately one minute remaining, relying on a steady offensive drive to secure the final victory. The game ended with the Irish holding onto the lead they had established in the first half. The result leaves only two unbeaten teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision: Utah and UCLA. Both schools won their games on Saturday to reach a 9-0 record.
This is the first time since 2003 that only two teams have survived the first nine games of the season without a loss. In 2003, TCU and Oklahoma achieved the same feat. The matchup in South Bend drew a packed crowd to Notre Dame Stadium. The temperature at kickoff was 40 degrees Fahrenheit and dropped into the mid-30s as the night progressed. Forty-three NFL scouts were present in the stands to evaluate players.
Notre Dame used the home game to honor several former players and figures. The on-field tributes included Joe Montana, Jerome Bettis Sr., Tony Rice, Chris Zorich, Ricky Watters, and Ron Pawlus. NBA President of Basketball Operations Byron Spruell was also recognized. The Irish additionally honored Pat Murphy, a former coach who won 73% of his games at Notre Dame and is currently the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Miami entered the game playing without injured wide receiver Malachi Toney, a Heisman Trophy candidate. The Hurricanes trailed 17-3 at halftime, a lower first-half scoring total than their average of 27 points in their previous eight games. Miami had been averaging at least 14 points in the first half before this contest. The loss marks Miami's fourth defeat against No. 1 ranked teams in recent history, though their record as the top seed is 44-7. Notre Dame improves its record against No. 1 opponents to 10-17-1, marking their first victory in exactly six years against a top-ranked team.
Both teams will play at home next Saturday. Miami will host Duke, while Notre Dame will host Boston College. The result of this game keeps Notre Dame's national championship hopes alive following their difficult season opener against the Hurricanes last year.
