Mall at Millenia officials closed off an area inside the Orlando shopping center Saturday after a large decoration fell from the ceiling and struck a shopper. Mall officials said security staff and first responders reached the injured guest, who was taken to a hospital. Officials did not release details about the guest's condition.
The decoration was a large metal star, according to witness Brittany Pinero, who was inside the mall when it fell. She said a loud sound came first, then shoppers reacted. "I heard like a big bang.. And then everyone started to kind of, like, freak out," Pinero said.
Pinero recorded video of the aftermath. The footage shows a person on the ground with paramedics nearby. "You can see the person on the ground, I'm guessing unconscious, not moving at all. And the paramedics were around him," Pinero said. "But it was very traumatic to see."
In a statement, the mall confirmed a holiday decoration fell and injured a guest, and said the area was closed while officials reviewed what happened. The mall said the safety of guests, retailers and employees remains its highest priority.
Pinero raised questions about decorations hung above shoppers. "You should be able to feel safe," she said. "The last thing you think about is something on the ceiling that's going to hit you." She said she hopes the mall takes down overhead decorations and that the injured shopper recovers.
