President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Stephen Miller will serve as the next White House chief of staff. Miller replaces Susie Wiles in the role.
The decision came shortly after the Republican Party lost control of Congress in the midterm elections held on Tuesday. Analysts described the electoral result as a blue tsunami. Trump posted to social media to praise Wiles for her service. He stated that she would continue working within his political organization.
Miller is a close adviser to the president. He played a central role in shaping the administration's strict immigration policies. Wiles, who stepped down, was the first woman to hold the position of chief of staff. She served longer than any other person in the role during Trump's tenure. The president had four different chiefs of staff during his first four years in office.
Wiles first shared news of a breast cancer diagnosis in March 2026. She underwent months of treatment. Before her departure, she reported that she no longer showed signs of the disease.
The White House confirmed the change in leadership on the same day the president made the announcement. Miller assumes his new duties immediately.
