Byron Donalds will serve as the next governor of Florida. He becomes the first Black person to hold the office in the state's history. Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly in Tuesday's election. The race concluded with Donalds securing the victory.

Donalds campaigned on affordability for Florida residents. He pledged to continue the conservative political direction set by outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis. The new governor has served in the United States Congress since 2021. He previously held two terms in the Florida state legislature. His campaign received strong financial backing and the endorsement of President Donald Trump.

The win marks a shift in leadership for the Sunshine State. Donalds takes over from DeSantis, who has defined the state's political tone in recent years. The new administration will focus on cost of living issues for voters. Donalds' background as a legislator and congressman informs his approach to state policy. He aims to maintain the momentum of the current conservative movement.

This election is one of nine nationwide where voters chose new governors. Several other candidates also achieved historic firsts in their respective states. Keisha Lance Bottoms won the governor's race in Georgia. She will be the first Black woman elected governor of any state in the country. Lance Bottoms served as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022. She previously advised former President Joe Biden. Her defeat of Republican Rick Jackson makes her the first Democrat to win a governor's race in Georgia in more than two decades.

Deb Haaland won the governor's race in New Mexico. She is of Pueblo Indian descent and will be the first Native American woman to serve as governor. Haaland defeated Republican Gregg Hull. She previously served in the U.S. Congress and as the Interior secretary under Biden. Her win adds to a history of firsts in her political career. She was among the first Native American women elected to Congress and the first Native American cabinet secretary.

Xavier Becerra and Gina Hinojosa will become the first elected Latino governor of California and the first Latina governor of Texas, respectively. Becerra defeated Republican Steve Hilton to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom. Hinojosa defeated incumbent Governor Greg Abbott. Hinojosa's victory makes her the first Democratic governor of Texas in more than 30 years. The win follows a demographic shift in the state with a growing Latino population.

David Crowley will become the first Black governor of Wisconsin. The Democrat defeated Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany. Crowley serves as the Milwaukee County executive. He campaigned on his record as a deal maker who works across the political aisle. His campaign initially suspended during the primary but reentered with the support of outgoing Governor Tony Evers. Tiffany's campaign spent significantly more than Crowley's during the general election.

Marsha Blackburn will be the first woman to win a gubernatorial race in Tennessee. The Republican senator defeated Democrat Jerri Green and independent candidates. Her campaign focused on immigration, China, and government spending. Amy Klobuchar will become the first woman governor of Minnesota. She defeated Republican Lisa Demuth, the speaker of the Minnesota House. Amy Acton will be the first woman elected governor of Ohio. She also becomes the first Jewish governor of the state and the first Democrat in the role in two decades. Acton defeated Vivek Ramaswamy after a contentious final stretch of the campaign.
