Democrats have taken control of Congress, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York says the party will move immediately to end the war in Iran. She stated that the conflict drove up costs and broke a promise made by President Trump to avoid prolonged wars. The conflict continues, with Iranian officials warning against renewed U.S. Attacks, but it remains unclear how Democrats intend to bring it to a close.
Gillibrand said that Democrats will focus on lowering costs and restoring health care access. She challenged Trump to reject bipartisan legislation restoring Medicaid coverage, saying, “I dare him to veto that.” The senator also cited Trump’s ballroom and cuts to food assistance and medical research as areas where the new Congress will act.
The new leadership faces pressure to hold the Trump administration accountable using new investigative powers. Gillibrand did not commit to a third impeachment but said the party can pursue accountability and legislation simultaneously. She proposed a ban on stock trading for members of Congress and senior administration officials.
Trump acknowledged on Wednesday that the war in Iran contributed to the Republican election losses. Gillibrand noted that the war was a major factor in the party’s victories. She discussed these issues during an interview with A Martinez for Morning Edition.
The senator also addressed Democrats’ gains in Republican states. She emphasized that the new Congress must act quickly to address the issues that voters prioritized during the campaign. The digital version of the interview was edited by Treye Green.
