One person died and two others were injured on Wednesday when a helicopter crashed into Biscayne Bay near Miami. The accident occurred shortly before noon near Bill Baggs State Park, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that one of the three occupants was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining two individuals were transported to a trauma center for treatment.
Preliminary reports from the National Transportation Safety Board indicate the aircraft was a Robinson R44 II. The agency stated the helicopter appeared to be on a photography flight at the time of the crash.
Firefighters from several local agencies joined Coast Guard personnel in responding to the water landing. Officials have not yet released the names of the people on board.
Television footage captured the aftermath of the incident. The video shows the aircraft resting upside down underwater. Two yellow emergency floats were visible attached to the bottom of the landing skids.
Those floats are designed to keep a helicopter afloat during a water landing. The crash site is located off Key Biscayne in the bay.
