JetBlue raised the cost of the first checked bag to $50 per segment for most domestic economy passengers. This fee applies to tickets purchased on or after November 3, 2026. The previous price was $39 for the same service.

The airline made this change during the start of the busy year-end travel season. JetBlue stated the increase helps offset rising fuel and operational costs. The company said this allows it to keep base ticket prices competitive while offering baggage as a paid option. This is the second time the carrier has raised these fees this year. It previously increased them in March.

The initial increase in March contributed to a wider wave of fee hikes across major U.S. airlines. Delta, United, American, and Southwest also raised their checked baggage prices. The timing of the latest change aligns with the start of peak travel demand.

Prices vary by season and how early passengers pay. During peak periods like Thanksgiving and winter break, the first bag costs $55 if paid at least 24 hours in advance. If payment occurs within the last 24 hours, the fee drops to $60 in off-peak times or rises to $70 in peak times. The second checked bag starts at $70 per segment in off-peak periods and $75 in peak periods. Airport counter check-in can push the second bag fee to $85.

Fuel prices drove these adjustments. The conflict with Iran began in late February following U.S. and Israeli attacks. This conflict restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supply. The disruption kept aviation fuel costs high. JetBlue executives reported on a recent earnings call that the average fuel price reached $3.91 per gallon last summer. This represented a 57% increase over the same period a year ago.

The airline projects the average fuel cost will rise to $4.64 per gallon in the final quarter of the year. This would be an 85% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite the cost increases, JetBlue executives said demand remains solid. The carrier operates its primary terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Some travelers can still check bags for free. This includes eligible holders of co-branded credit cards and members of the JetBlue loyalty program. The airline confirmed these exceptions remain in effect despite the general fee hike.
