The Spanish national soccer federation has postponed all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday. The decision followed a train accident in central Spain that killed more than 60 people and left dozens injured.

The collision involved a high-speed train that struck the rear of another train stopped on the tracks. The federation cited solidarity with the victims as the reason for halting the competition. It stated that the entire Spanish soccer community stands united in grief over the tragedy.

The federation added that clubs have made themselves available to authorities to assist with the response to the accident. It indicated that a revised tournament schedule will be provided later. First-round games originally set for Thursday have not been postponed, and matches were completed on Tuesday.

Major clubs across the country issued statements expressing condolences. Real Madrid C.F. said it wishes to express its deepest sorrow over the tragic railway accident. The club extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. It also expressed affection and solidarity to the injured and all those affected.

Barcelona expressed its deepest condolences to the victims in a separate statement. The club conveyed its support and solidarity to the families and friends of the victims. It wished all those injured a speedy recovery. Atletico Madrid said it joined in the grief for the victims of the terrible railway accident that occurred earlier in the day.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid do not enter the tournament until the round of 32. Five top-flight clubs were scheduled to play in the first round on Wednesday. These teams included Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Valencia, Alaves, and Levante. The Spanish league has not announced any postponements for games scheduled for this weekend.
