The Chicago Bears acquired All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans in a trade agreed upon Thursday.
Chicago sent its first-round selections in 2027 and 2028, along with a fourth-round pick in the 2027 draft, to Tennessee. In return, the Bears received Simmons and a fifth-round pick in 2028. A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press that the transaction had not yet been officially announced.
The 29-year-old Simmons has recorded four sacks in seven games this season. He earned first-team All-Pro honors last year after posting a career-high 11 sacks in 15 games. His arrival strengthens a defensive line that had questions entering the stretch run.
Chicago is 5-2 after winning two consecutive games. The team is chasing the undefeated Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North and prepares to play at Seattle on Monday night. Coach Ben Johnson led the Bears to a division title last season with an 11-6 record. The team advanced to the divisional round after beating the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card game before losing to the Los Angeles Rams in overtime.
General Manager Ryan Poles and Johnson have signaled their intent to win the franchise's first Super Bowl since 1985. Johnson noted the team maintains constant dialogue about needs for the current season and the future. “He’s turning over every stone that he possibly can to improve this football team just like he has ever since I’ve gotten in this building and I feel really good about our process,” Johnson said.
Simmons addressed the potential trade on Wednesday. “I don’t worry about the things I can’t control,” he said. “Them types of things are a distraction.”
