Grant Wilson threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Becker on the first play of overtime. The score gave the No. 4 ranked Indiana Hoosiers a 23-16 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
The game required extra time because of a late surge by Minnesota. With 19 seconds remaining in regulation, Luke Drzewiecki kicked a 60-yard field goal. That shot set a career high for Drzewiecki and gave Minnesota a 16-13 lead. It was the longest field goal of his career.
Indiana responded immediately before the clock ran out. Charlie Becker caught a 33-yard pass that moved the ball into position. Paddy McAteer then kicked a 60-yard field goal as time expired. That kick tied the game and forced overtime. McAteer's kick was also a career high for him.
Indiana coach Curt Cignetti decided to change quarterbacks at halftime. He removed starting quarterback Josh Hoover after Hoover threw his second interception of the season. Hoover finished 8 of 19 for 119 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Wilson replaced him and went 9 of 17 for 156 yards and one touchdown in the second half. Becker had eight receptions for 149 yards and the winning score.
Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey completed 20 of 37 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown. Javon Tracy caught seven passes for 40 yards. The Gophers dropped to a 5-3 record, with a 3-2 mark in the Big Ten. They have lost 13 straight games against defending national champions. They have not beaten two Top 25 teams in consecutive weeks since 1956.
Two late replay reviews changed the flow of the game. Officials overturned a go-ahead touchdown pass for Minnesota. They also took away an interception that would have given Indiana a short field goal attempt in the final minutes. Indiana now sits at 8-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. This marks the second straight week the team has won in overtime. They previously beat Michigan 13-6 last week.
Minnesota will host No. 7 UCLA next Saturday. Indiana has a bye week before hosting Southern California on Nov. 14.
