Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Vienna Open. The victory marks the Spanish player's fourth title of the 2026 season.
Alcaraz has now beaten the Australian in seven consecutive matches. Their previous encounters covered grass, clay, indoor hard courts, and outdoor hard courts. The final point came after Alcaraz used a sliced backhand drop shot to draw de Minaur forward. The Australian retrieved the ball, but Alcaraz lobbed him. De Minaur volleyed the return near the net, allowing Alcaraz to finish with a cross-court forehand that landed just inside the line.
The second-seeded Spaniard displayed a broad smile after securing the trophy. It is his 28th career title. He also captured the Australian Open earlier this year, completing a career Grand Slam.
Alcaraz said he tried to be aggressive throughout the match. He wanted to show de Minaur that he had to play more solidly and make smarter decisions to win. The player noted that he found his rhythm at the end and played well. He described the week as emotional and amazing.
The result helps Alcaraz return to full fitness after injury and fatigue hampered him earlier in the season. De Minaur, the fifth seed, was seeking his second title of the year. The Australian reached the final by defeating Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. Alcaraz beat Daniil Medvedev in the other semifinal match.
Zverev is set to move to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday.
