The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions.
The team defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field. This victory marks the first title in the franchise's 58th season.
Milwaukee began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and moved to Wisconsin in 1970. The only other World Series appearance occurred in 1982. That team lost Game 7 to the St. Louis Cardinals after squandering a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. The 2026 squad followed a different path. They won 103 games in the regular season, the most in the majors. In the postseason, they went 11-2, including a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
Manager Pat Murphy, 67, led the team. He survived a heart attack in 2020 and won the National League Manager of the Year award in 2024 and 2025. Murphy noted that the players cared more about winning together than individual statistics. He stated, "When you talk about this team, you’ve got to talk about people who care about each other."
Jacob Misiorowski earned the win. The 24-year-old pitcher threw 5 2/3 innings without allowing a run. He struck out two batters and walked none. Misiorowski left the game with a right calf cramp but received a standing ovation from the crowd. He had a 0.84 ERA in the Series. Rookie Cooper Pratt had six hits and two runs batted in. He set a Series rookie record with six consecutive hits before a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. William Contreras, named Series MVP, hit an RBI double.
Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said his players were hurt but grateful for their season. The Rays dropped to 0-3 in World Series history. They had lost previous appearances in 2008 and 2020. Only the Brooklyn Dodgers and Detroit Tigers have lost their first three World Series attempts more often. The Rays were trying to become the first team to come back from a 3-0 deficit to force Game 6. Twenty-one of the 26 teams that lost the first three games were swept.
The Brewers will return to Milwaukee for a parade. Principal owner Mark Attanasio told the crowd, "Milwaukee has waited 44 years, and Milwaukee, you have your world championship." The team led the league in wins and scored a major league-low 32.1% of runs on home runs. They combined with Tampa Bay for only four home runs in the Series.
The championship comes during a labor dispute. Owners are pushing for a salary cap, arguing that small-market teams like Milwaukee cannot succeed otherwise. The Brewers ranked 19th in payroll as of August 31. A management lockout is likely to begin on Dec. 2. This could threaten the 2027 season.
