The United States launched defensive strikes against two Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attacks focused on Iranian forces using surface-to-air missiles against American assets. Iranian state television reported that residents on Qeshm Island heard the explosions.

The strikes occurred shortly before the U.S. midterm elections. President Donald Trump had previously stated that the United States would not launch attacks on Iran before those elections. The current conflict remains unpopular with voters, and the resulting increase in gasoline prices has become a political liability for Republicans seeking to keep control of Congress.

Vice President JD Vance addressed reporters earlier on Monday. He said he had just finished a call with Trump regarding ongoing negotiations with Iran. Vance told the press that he and the president felt good about the chances of reaching a negotiated deal.

The attacks appear limited in scope rather than a full return to heavy hostilities. The timing places the military action directly in the path of the upcoming election cycle. U.S. forces targeted specific missile systems to protect their own equipment in the waterway. The Iranian government has confirmed the blasts but has not yet issued a detailed statement on the damage sustained. The next phase of diplomatic talks is expected to continue despite the gunfire.
