Lamine Yamal is the statistical favorite to claim the 2026 Ballon d’Or, according to data released by the French artificial intelligence firm Avisia. The Barcelona winger holds a 23 percent probability of winning the award, which recognizes the best footballer of the 2025-26 season. Harry Kane follows as the second option with a 21 percent chance, while Kylian Mbappe and Rodri are tied for third at 19 percent. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five with an 18 percent likelihood of securing a record-extending ninth trophy.

Despite the AI projections, betting markets tell a different story. Bookmakers view Kane as the outright favorite, assigning him approximately a 70 percent probability of victory. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at the London Palladium, concluding the season’s individual honors race with less than a day remaining.

Player and manager endorsements are split among the top contenders. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone argued that Messi deserves the honor after his recent retirement from international duty. “After the World Cup, he played at his age… No doubt about it,” Simeone said. Former Italy international Marco Materazzi supported this view, noting that Messi “showed, at 38 years old, he’s in a different league.” Jude Bellingham, who is also on the shortlist, backed Kane, describing the England captain as a “very honest and hard-working person.”

Support for Yamal has come from his Barcelona teammate Anthony Gordon, who called the 19-year-old’s performance “ridiculous” and said he is “on a whole other level.” Mbappe has received backing from his Real Madrid colleague Aurelien Tchouameni, who described the Frenchman’s season as “incredible.”

The debate hinges on the balance between individual statistics and team success. Mbappe leads in raw output, topping La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and set the record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi’s 82 in 2011-12. However, neither player won a major trophy with their club or country during the campaign.

Yamal’s case relies on his title collection. The Spain international won the World Cup with his national team and La Liga with Barcelona. Although his individual statistics were impacted by injury, recent history favors title winners. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d’Or recipients failed to win the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America during their award year. Yamal is bidding to become the youngest winner in history, a title currently held by Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.
