Nearly 500 likes and almost 200 shares on a single Facebook post kept Ocean 302 from closing its doors in Melbourne Beach. The restaurant was seven days from shutting down in late September when the digital outpouring began.

Charlie Zubi, who has owned the establishment for nearly 11 years, said the business was running out of money during the slow season. "We were going to close right away," Zubi said. "Right away because I didn’t have the money." Bar manager Veronica Afflerbach confirmed the timeline, stating they were about seven days from closing when she decided to reach out to the community.

Afflerbach posted on Facebook asking for help. The response was immediate and widespread. "I can’t even believe how many people reached out to us," Afflerbach said. "They showed up in ways that we couldn’t even imagine." The post generated many comments, with customers sharing memories of the restaurant and pledging their support.

Some regulars who did not live in the area year-round contacted the business directly to express their intent to return. "They reached out to us, called the restaurant, said, ‘Can we buy gift cards?’" Afflerbach said. The influx of interest and pre-purchases provided the cash flow the restaurant needed to stay afloat.

One month later, Ocean 302 remains open, though it continues to work through the slower season. Zubi said the community support gave the business hope at a critical moment. "It means more than anything I can think of," he said. The owner said he wants customers to know the restaurant is there for them, too, adding, "We’re always here for you." If there’s anything they can do for you, let them know.
