Jack Campbell, the Detroit Lions' All-Pro linebacker, reported on Wednesday that he can fully move his lower body. He said he is also continuing to make progress with movement in his upper body. This update comes days after he was carried off the field on a backboard during a game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Campbell suffered the neck injury early in the fourth quarter of a 19-15 victory for the Lions on Sunday. Medical personnel found him alert and breathing when they transported him to the hospital, where he has been recovering since.
In a statement released by the team, Campbell described his recovery process. He noted that while there is still work ahead, he remains very optimistic. He said he is taking things one day at a time and staying positive while focusing on getting better.
Lions coach Dan Campbell reacted to the news in a statement of his own. He called the update good news and positive news, adding that the team is thankful for the progress.
The injury occurred when Campbell hit tight end T.J. Hockenson. He was face down on the turf and not moving. After medical staff evaluated him, they strapped him to a board and lifted him onto a cart. The Detroit team and most of the coaching staff surrounded the cart as it left the field to a round of applause.
Campbell was a former Iowa star drafted by the Lions with the 18th overall pick in 2023. Last season, he became the first NFL player in seven years to record 150-plus tackles, at least five sacks, and three forced fumbles. That performance earned him an All-Pro selection.
