Alvin K. Hellerstein, a senior federal judge in Manhattan, died on Wednesday at the age of 92. Edward Friedland, the executive director of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, announced the news. The cause of death has not been released.

Hellerstein served on the federal bench for nearly three decades. President Bill Clinton appointed him to the district court in 1998. He transitioned to senior status in 2011. Before his judicial appointment, Hellerstein worked as a litigator in Manhattan and served in the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

His legacy is defined by the legal proceedings following the 2001 World Trade Center attacks. He presided over dozens of wrongful death, injury, and property damage claims. That litigation spanned two decades. Fellow attorneys described him as deeply empathetic toward victims and their families. He reportedly spent hours in his chambers with them and rejected settlement offers he viewed as insufficient. In 2008, he also ordered the end to a government search for human remains at a Staten Island landfill.

In the final weeks of his life, Hellerstein handled high-profile cases involving the current administration. Two weeks before his death, he presided over a hearing in the conspiracy narcoterrorism case against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Maduro was captured earlier this year in a surprise operation. Cilia Flores, Maduro’s wife, was also involved in the legal proceedings in New York.

Hellerstein also issued a ruling in August regarding former President Donald Trump. He denied Trump’s attempt to vacate his conviction in the hush money case. The judge rejected the argument that the case should be moved to federal court or dismissed based on presidential immunity. This was the third time Hellerstein denied such requests. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals had previously ordered him to reconsider his stance, noting he failed to account for relevant questions, though the appellate judges did not specify how he should rule.

Known for his independent nature, Hellerstein maintained strict discipline in his courtroom. He required attendees to wear masks for more than two years after the pandemic, a requirement most other judges had dropped. In 2020, he ordered the release of Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, from home confinement. Hellerstein ruled that the government’s action to block Cohen from publishing a book violated the First Amendment.

Earlier in his career, Hellerstein made headlines for a 2015 ruling. He ordered a New York cable company to pay a Texas woman $229,500. The compensation was for 153 automated calls her phone received.
