Amazon on Thursday announced that Amazon Prime members can now place orders from hundreds of thousands of restaurants on Uber Eats with no delivery fees on purchases exceeding $25. The agreement takes effect immediately and allows customers to access the service directly through Amazon.com and the retailer’s shopping application.
The company, headquartered in Seattle, stated in a joint communication that this move integrates restaurant delivery into its existing subscription model. Prime members pay $14.99 per month or $139 per year for the service, which already includes free shipping benefits. This is the second time Amazon has partnered with a restaurant delivery platform for its subscribers.
In 2024, Amazon integrated Grubhub into its Prime benefits. The retailer indicated that the Grubhub offer for these customers will end as the Uber Eats partnership begins. This follows a similar trend in the industry, where DoorDash announced last month its intent to acquire Instacart for $17 billion. That potential deal aims to consolidate grocery delivery operations in the United States and abroad by combining DoorDash’s logistics with Instacart’s technology and supermarket relationships.
Andrew Macdonald, president and chief operating officer of Uber, commented on the collaboration in the joint statement. He noted that the companies built an experience for Prime members designed to make restaurant delivery feel as natural, comfortable, and affordable as ordering other items on Uber Eats. The goal is to streamline the process for existing subscribers.
To encourage adoption, Prime members can start with a $20 discount on their first two Uber Eats orders. These orders must total at least $25 and the offer is valid during the first 14 days of the partnership. The companies view this as a way to compete with rivals entering the restaurant delivery space.
Walmart recently made its first foray into restaurant delivery partnerships last summer by teaming up with Subway. Subway is the largest restaurant tenant within Walmart stores. Since then, the retailer has expanded to select locations of Dunkin’ and Papa Johns. Walmart now lists 2,400 restaurant locations on its delivery platform.
Greg Cathey, senior vice president of e-commerce transformation at Walmart, stated that 65% of orders placed through the Subway partnership have included other Walmart items. This data suggests that combining grocery shopping with meal delivery drives additional sales for the retailer.
