The New York City Fire Department reported six deaths and seven injuries after a fire destroyed a two-story home in the Brooklyn borough on Thursday morning. The blaze occurred in a row house located in the Sunset Park neighborhood. Officials stated that a cause for the fire had not yet been determined.

Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods described the scene as fire spreading across every floor upon arrival. He noted that flames were blowing out of every window and meeting responders at the front door. Firefighters rescued four occupants by entering through a rear entrance. Two of those rescued were trapped behind window bars inside the home.

More than 200 first responders attended the scene. The fire was brought under control in approximately three hours. Four people died at the scene, while two others with critical injuries were transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Four additional people sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Three firefighters also suffered minor injuries. No names for the injured or deceased had been released as of the news conference.

Eight neighbors were displaced by the fire and taken to hotels. Fire marshals began investigating the property. A lithium-ion battery was found at the scene, but it remained unknown whether the battery was related to the fire's cause. The wood-framed home was severely charred by the time responders arrived.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the news conference near the site. He called the incident a devastating fire. Mamdani stated that the neighborhood would take a long time to mourn the neighbors lost that morning and recover from the grief. The fire department continues its investigation into the origins of the blaze.
