President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he does not know whether Vice President JD Vance will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. The comments came one day after Democrats won a historic midterm victory that gave them control of both chambers of Congress.

Trump spoke to reporters at the White House when asked about Vance's political ambitions. He said, "We will see what happens. We do not know who will run. There is a lot of people. Maybe no one will do it. Maybe he will not run, I do not know."

The Democratic win in the midterm elections served as a signal of voter rejection of Trump. The results also opened the succession race for the 2028 presidential election. The current president cannot run again because he has already served two terms, though he has expressed a desire to return.

Polls identify Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the leading candidates for the Republican nomination. Neither official has announced a candidacy. Vance stated during the campaign that he has not made a final decision on his presidential aspirations. He expressed confidence that he would have Trump's support if he chose to compete.

Trump later clarified that he and Vance had not discussed the matter. The vice president's potential entry into the race remains undefined as the party begins to assess the post-midterm political environment.
