The US Senate and House of Representatives are now controlled by Democrats for the next two years following the midterm election.

Vice President JD Vance attributed the Republican defeat to the war in Iran in a social media post released the day after the vote. He stated, “The reason we lost is the war.” Vance listed four demands from voters who turned against the GOP: end the war, focus on cost of living and inflation, put America first, and change the relationship with Israel.

The conflict began when the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Trump believed the military action would force Iran into submission and turn the country into a vassal state. Instead, Iran survived and counterattacked against US, Israeli, and Arab targets. These strikes left US bases in the Arabian Peninsula and Jordan incapacitated or evacuated. The fighting also damaged Arab energy and transport systems, disrupting global energy flows.

Economic factors played a decisive role in the election outcome. Iran restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which drove up prices for groceries, gasoline, diesel, travel, and other imports. CBS exit polls indicated that 90 percent of voters said the cost of living was a major factor in their voting decision.

Voters also reacted to the manner in which the war was conducted. Trump attacked Iran without clear strategic goals, citing the need to prevent a nuclear weapon despite inspections finding no evidence of one. CBS exit polls confirmed that voters opposed the war due to its perceived useless militarism and economic impact. Many voters were angered that Trump ignored the constitutional requirement for congressional authorization and his 2024 promise to end useless foreign wars.

The perception that Israel pushed the US into the conflict also influenced the electorate. Voters felt humiliated that the US military could not achieve its stated goals and angry that a foreign country’s lobbying power initiated the conflict. On election day, President Trump promised to end nearly $4 billion in US military aid to Israel. The aid was to be channeled differently rather than stopped.

The election results reflected a mix of household economic concerns and broader grievances. Voters expressed fury at corruption, military overreach, and anti-immigration policing. The centrality of the US-Israeli relationship in Palestine also played a role in many progressive Democratic campaigns.
