Senate Majority Leader Chris Murphy of Connecticut is currently in the hospital after suffering a stroke. His office released a statement on Sunday confirming the news and noting that he is expected to make a full recovery.

Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, detailed the events leading to his admission. She stated that the senator began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending a hockey game for his son. Medical staff at a local hospital diagnosed the stroke before transferring him to Johns Hopkins for continued monitoring.

Murphy, who is 53, has played a prominent role in the Democratic Party during the current midterm cycle. He has served as a frequent campaign surrogate for candidates and is often cited as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential election. His policy focus has centered on foreign affairs and rigorous oversight of the executive branch.

The senator recently completed a multi-stop trip to the Middle East. Following that tour, he cautioned that President Trump was likely to intensify military actions against Iran once the midterm elections concluded.

Murphy joins a list of legislators who have faced health emergencies this year. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky missed several months of Senate duties while recovering from a hospital stay and rehabilitation. Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey was absent from the Capitol for a similar duration due to depression treatment.

In 2022, three other Democratic lawmakers experienced strokes. They included Senator Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-Senate candidate John Fetterman.
