Jon Ossoff has won reelection to the U.S. Senate in Georgia, according to a race call by The Associated Press. He defeated Republican Representative Mike Collins in the Tuesday contest. The result confirms Ossoff’s status as the only incumbent Senate Democrat to hold his seat in a state that President Trump carried in the 2024 presidential election.

The outcome contrasts with earlier predictions for the 2026 midterms. A year ago, political observers viewed the Georgia Senate race as a marquee showdown between the two parties. However, the dynamic shifted as the Republican Party nominated Collins. He is the owner of a family trucking company and faced scrutiny over his ties to family members and former staffers who hold white nationalist and antisemitic views. Collins also continued to support Trump’s claims regarding widespread election fraud in 2020.

Ossoff, a former congressional aide and documentary filmmaker, gained national attention during the 2017 special election in a suburban House district. He was first elected to the Senate in a 2021 runoff. During his tenure, he built a reputation for methodically questioning Trump appointees during hearings. His performance in those hearings, combined with his constituent service, earned him respect from some Republican officials in the state.

Historical context suggests the race should have been closer. In 2021, Democrats flipped both of Georgia’s Senate seats for the first time in a generation. In the 2022 midterms, Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock barely retained his seat in a runoff against a deeply flawed opponent. Outside of those specific Senate races, Republicans have continued to win nearly every other statewide contest in Georgia.

During the Republican primary this spring, Trump endorsed Collins over former football coach Derek Dooley. Dooley was a first-time candidate backed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. The endorsement helped Collins secure the nomination, but his campaign struggled to dispel concerns among independent and Republican-leaning voters regarding his political associations.

Ossoff’s campaign gained momentum as clips from his rally speeches circulated online. In those speeches, he criticized alleged graft within Trump’s orbit. Many Democrats began discussing him as a potential presidential candidate for 2028. Ossoff has stated that he is not running for the White House in that cycle. The victory provides a boost to Democrats seeking to identify fresh faces to lead the party.
