Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson spent approximately 45 minutes at a hospital with a broken rib before returning to the field to help his team defeat the Carolina Panthers 27-19 on Thursday night. The 53-yard catch that caused the injury occurred in the second quarter at Lambeau Field. Watson sustained the injury while making a diving stop against Panthers cornerback Will Lee. Lee was carted to the locker room with a hamstring injury and did not return to the game.
Watson described the immediate aftermath of the collision, stating that he could not breathe on the field and was spitting up blood. Team medical staff ordered a CT scan to check for internal bleeding. The scan showed no internal bleeding but confirmed a broken rib. Watson estimated he was at the hospital for between 45 minutes and an hour before being transported back to the stadium. He applied padding to the injured area and prepared to rejoin the game.
The wide receiver had recorded six receptions for 100 yards before the injury. Through the first eight games of the season, Watson has 42 catches for 708 yards, both career highs. His return to the field in the third quarter drew a loud ovation from the crowd and a celebratory welcome from teammates. Watson compared the moment to a professional wrestling event, noting the cameras were on him as he exited the ambulance.
Safety Javon Bullard said the team was stunned by the return. Safety Xavier McKinney attributed the decision to Watson's toughness and love for the team. Watson stated that he did not consider staying out once the CT scan results came back clean. He emphasized the importance of playing time after missing previous seasons with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and other injuries.
Watson finished the game with eight catches for 113 yards. His final reception was a 7-yard grab on a third-and-two play with about two and a half minutes remaining. That play helped the Packers maintain a lead after Carolina had narrowed a 27-10 deficit to 27-19. Watson said being on the field means everything to him.
The Packers secured the win at Lambeau Field. Watson's performance contributed to the final score. The team will prepare for their next scheduled game.
