MADRID, Real Madrid issued a statement Wednesday apologizing to the Chinese people regarding comments made by Kylian Mbappe. The club stated it wished to express apologies for any discomfort caused by the player's recent words.

The statement followed Mbappe's expression of regret one day earlier. During an online interview, the France striker discussed a meme of himself and referred to Mao Zedong as "a Chinese dictator." The comment drew immediate criticism. Mbappe later called the remark "ill-judged" and said, "I now understand that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities" worldwide.

Following the remarks, Mbappe lost brand deals with at least three Chinese companies. China Media Group (CMG) suspended broadcasts of Spanish league matches and other games featuring Mbappe. CMG demanded apologies from La Liga, Mbappe, and Real Madrid. The Spanish league has also apologized.

Real Madrid's statement said the club holds deep respect for China, its history, its culture, and its citizens. The club also expressed respect for the millions of Chinese fans who follow Real Madrid. CMG confirmed it received the apology from Madrid.

China's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that it took Mbappe's apology "seriously." The outcome regarding Mbappe's brand deals remains undetermined.

The club also stated its desire to continue strengthening ties with China and its citizens.
