Bobby Lundquist won his 10th Florida State Golf Association state championship at the Legends Championship in Naples.
Lundquist, a Sanford native and resident, carded rounds of 74 and 70 for a 36-hole total of even-par 144 in the 75-79 Division on October 7-8 at Bonita Bay Club. He sat in third place after an opening-round 74, one shot behind Sam Robinson and Bob Casamento, who each shot 1-under 71 in rain-delayed first-round play. Lundquist birdied his final two holes on October 8 to finish the second round at even-par 70 and take the division title by one stroke over Casamento, who closed at 1-over 145. Tom Grady Jr. finished third at 147. Lundquist's second Legends division title in three years came after he returned to competitive golf following his 2014 retirement.
Lundquist coached and taught at Seminole High School, his alma mater, before moving into academic administration and serving as principal of Oviedo High School. He played baseball and golf at the University of Florida and set records in baseball and basketball as a youth and high school athlete.
In a text message, Lundquist said the win was unexpected: "I'll be honest this was not on my radar in retirement!" He credited his parents, his wife, and his competitive drive.
Lundquist now holds six team state titles and four individual state championships. He competes in the 75-79 Division.
Jay Nelson of Winter Springs, the only other Seminole County resident in the field, shot 82-78 for 160 and finished sixth in the 80-and-Over Division.
