President Donald Trump will hold two campaign rallies on Sunday, just two days before the midterm elections. The president changed his mind at the last minute to make these final stops in Iowa and Kansas.
Republican control of the Senate hinges on the outcomes in both states. In Iowa, Republican Representative Ashley Hinson trails Democrat Josh Turek by three points in a recent Marist poll. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton holds a narrow lead over incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall for the first time.
Trump has previously won Iowa three times and Kansas twice. He seeks to use his presence to boost the Republican ticket in both races. The last time Iowa sent a Democrat to the Senate was in 2008. The last time Kansas did was nearly a century ago.
House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed the polling data as inaccurate. “I’ve seen the voters on the ground. I’m telling you, the polls are wrong. They’re inaccurate. They’re underrepresenting Republicans,” Johnson said.
The president will kick off the schedule at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa, at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. He will then travel to the Salina regional airport in Kansas for an event at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
Trump’s approval rating sits around 34 percent, according to the latest Quinnipiac poll. Voters will determine if his appearance helps or hurts the party on Tuesday.
