A breakfast diner in Logan County, West Virginia, has added a permanent menu item to remember a local law enforcement officer killed this month.
The restaurant, Janet's, now serves a single pancake and a slice of bacon under the name Caden Cakes. Owner Kevin Moore created the dish to honor Deputy Caden Mullins, who died on Saturday, October 24, at age 23.
Mullins was responding to a call on state Route 10 near Rum Creek Road when his vehicle crashed. His wife, who was in the car, was transported to a hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Moore chose the specific meal because it was what Mullins ordered when he sat down at the diner. The menu now displays the name Caden Cakes alongside Mullins' badge number, 24. Moore said the visual prompt helps tell the story to new customers.
"When people come in, they'll be like, 'Who's Caden Cakes?,'" Moore said. "That way somebody can always speak up and say, 'Hey, he was a good man. He was a deputy. He was a father, a husband.' It's just an honor to have it on my menu."
Moore recalled Mullins' habit of clearing his own table before leaving. "That man would get his dirty dishes and bring them back to the kitchen," Moore said. "He said, 'You all take care of us, that's the least I can do.' That's something I will always remember. That's what kind of man he was."
Longtime customer Debbie Baisden-Fields, who knew Mullins from the local vocational school, said the officer was polite and helpful long before he joined the department. "I always carried a big tote bag with stuff, all kinds of stuff, and he would carry the bag from my car into the inside," Fields said. "He was just very accommodating. Friendly, kind.. He was a good kid. So I think it's an honor to do Caden Cakes today."
Moore stated that all proceeds from Caden Cakes sales on Friday will be donated, with additional funds coming from his own pocket. Fields said she expects to order the dish frequently. "We'll probably do Caden Cakes quite often," she said.
