Manchester United Drops to Brink of Relegation Zone After Chelsea Loss
A 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge and a victory by Coventry City left the 20-time champions one point above the bottom three.

Manchester United found itself one point above the Premier League relegation zone on Friday after a 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The defeat ended United's hopes of avoiding the bottom three for the day, a status only preserved by Nottingham Forest's 2-0 loss to Brentford. Coventry City secured a 3-1 home victory over Sunderland, moving ahead of United in the standings. This result places the Red Devils in a precarious position after their first nine-match winless league run since 1986.
United played with ten men for much of the second half after Lisandro Martinez received a second yellow card for a challenge on Wesley Fofana. The match was decided by a solo goal from Morgan Rogers and a penalty converted by Cole Palmer. Despite an improved first-half performance, recalled captain Bruno Fernandes failed to convert several key chances.
The result extends United's poor start to the season, marking their worst league opening in 40 years. The club has won only once in nine league matches this season. Its only other victory in 13 all-competition matches came against promoted side Ipswich Town. The 20-time English champions are now just one place and one point outside the relegation zone.
Manager Michael Carrick, who is in his first full season in charge, expressed confidence in the team's mentality despite the result. Carrick stated that the two halves of the match were vastly different and that the team unraveled in the second half. He indicated he expects to remain in charge for the upcoming Champions League fixture.
Forward Bryan Mbeumo noted that the team's mentality was present from the start, though they missed opportunities to take an early lead. Mbeumo suggested that the missed chances were a positive takeaway from the defeat.
United hosts Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday. Crystal Palace's result in the final Premier League match of the day against Tottenham will determine if United falls into the bottom three. A point for Palace will drop United into that position.
