Hammond police arrested an 18-year-old man on Monday morning following a shooting at the Walmart North store. The incident occurred in the 1100 block of 5th Avenue. A 25-year-old woman died inside the store after being struck by multiple bullets.

An off-duty Hammond police officer working as a security guard at the location reported the shooting. The officer told dispatchers that the suspect was already under control. According to the police spokesperson, the woman and the man had a discussion that turned into a physical fight. Authorities believe the two knew each other.

The 18-year-old man dropped his weapon and waited for officers to arrive. He is currently held in custody. The Hammond Fire Department responded to the scene. Investigators from the Lake County Office of the Medical Examiner are also on site.

Hammond police officials stated that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. They said the public is not at risk. The store will remain closed for the rest of the day.

A Walmart spokesperson issued a statement after the event. The company said it was deeply disturbed by what happened in Hammond. The statement added that the retailer is working closely with authorities as the investigation continues.
